Merlin H. Matthias

Merlin H. Matthias, 86, passed away Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003 at the Beach Health Care Center, Sheboygan.

Born Nov. 15, 1917 in Longwood, he was a son of Henry and Elisa Buss Matthias. Upon completion of his education, Merlin apprenticed with his father in the cheese making industry.

On Sept. 25, 1937, he was united in marriage to Jeanette Stanzel of Manitowoc. She preceded him in death on April 22, 2000. Throughout their married life, the couple lived in Tennessee, Cleveland, Wis., Sheboygan and Florida, returning to Sheboygan in 1991.

In 1942, Merlin was in partnership with his father and brother, Bart, in operating the Matthias Dairy in Cleveland. He was the first in this area to introduce glass gallon and half-pint bottles, used in vending machines.

In 1964, the couple moved to Sheboygan, where he owned and operated the Merlin Marina on North Commerce St. until 1979, when he retired. During his retirement in Florida, he worked for Mayport Marina of Florida.

Merlin was a member of the Sheboygan Yacht Club, the Sheboygan Outboard Club, the Elks B.P.O. Lodge 299, the Sheboygan Sportsmen Club, Isaac Walton League, a member of the Cleveland Fire Dept. Cleveland Chamber of Commerce and had served on the advisory committee for small engines at LTI, where he had also served as an instructor.

Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Judith Hansen of Wausau, Patricia (Robert) Pearson of West Bend and Mary Lynn (Henry) Gaglardi of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark (Sharon) Matthias and Michael (Terry) Matthias, both of Sheboygan; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bart (Betty) Matthias of Waterrtown and Willard (Alice) Matthias of Cleveland, and three sisters, Evelyn Kraft of Sheboygan, Dorothy (Joseph) Pitsch of Appleton and Gloria (Donald) Hopf of Howards Grove. Preceding Merlin in death are his wife, Jeanette, parents, Henry and Elsa, stepmother, Gertrude, and his brother Elroy and wife, Sadie.

Friends may call at the Stoltenberg Funeral Chapels, 1056 Hemlock St. Cleveland, on Thursday, Sept. 4 from 4 to 7 p.m.

Funeral services will follow at 7 p.m. at the Stoltenberg Chapels with the Rev. Helen Nickel of St. Andrew Lutheran Church, Sheboygan, officiating.

Private family rites at St. George Cemetery, Cleveland will be held on Friday, Sept. 5.
