Alfred H. Berger, 86, of 208 7th Avenue, Marion, died Tuesday, June 13, 2006, in St. Lukes Hospital, Cedar Rapids, after a brief illness. Services were, June 15, 2006, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion, by the Rev. Jonna Jensen. Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.


At the time of his death Survivors included a daughter, Betty Jane "Janie" McGowan of Marion; three grandchildren, Casey (Jane), Adam (Julie) and Joby; and five great-grandchildren, Mackenzi, Abigail, Emilee, Stoan and Tripp.


He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Carolyn "Betty" Berger.

Al was born August 13, 1919, the son of Adolf and Berta (Brosanova) Berger, in Vienna, Austria. He left Austria to escape the Nazi take over and fled to the U.S to live with his Aunt and Uncle, David and Irena Berger.
He was united in marriage to Carolyn Betty Allender on November 25, 1943, in Cedar Rapids. Betty died November 8, 2004. A longtime businessman,


Al was a furrier for seventy years and owned and operated Berger Furrier on Seventh Avenue in Marion.


He was a 20-year member of Marion Kiwanis and a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge No. 6 AF&AM of Marion.


Al was an award-winning black and white photographer. He established a wildlife preserve near Coggon. Al was very patriotic and loved America and people in general.


A memorial fund was established in Als name.
