James Inman Carter was born in Bradley County, Tennessee, the son of John G. Carter and Darthula A. Inman, and was married to Samuella Childress. They were parents of Garnet, Mary Lynn, Paul, Lucille and Doris. James I. had been in the mercantile business in Sweetwater Tennessee, the J. I. Carter & Brother Store, a large brick building located on the main street. But in 1885 he moved with his family to Chicago where he was a member of the Chicago Board of Trade. They moved to Chattanooga about 1900 where they lived on Lookout Mountain. He was even involved in the mining industry for a short while in Ducktown, Tennessee
