Jon R. Koch, age 59, of Manitowoc, lost his battle with melanoma and died peacefully Friday morning, June 28, 2013 at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on January 28, 1954 in Manitowoc, the fourth child of Evelyn (Herman) Koch and the late Harold H. Koch. He was educated at Holy Innocents grade school and graduated from Roncalli High School with the class of 1972. He then attended the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point and Silver Lake College to pursue a degree in Education. In 1987, he began his career as a firefighter with the City of Manitowoc. Jon furthered his education by completing coursework to become an EMT and Paramedic, working as a firefighter for 26 years. He progressed through the ranks as motor pump operator in 1997, Lieutenant in 2004 and Captain in 2010, before his retirement May 1, 2013. Jon also was employed at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center in various medical positions for 25 years. Jon was proud to serve others in his career and treated people with dignity and respect. Jon especially loved the outdoors, bicycling, gardening, jogging, cutting grass, golfing, the Packers and being at the cottage. He loved spending time with his family and taking care of his grandson.

Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law: Ashley Koch-Krause and her husband, Joshua, Manitowoc, Bevin Koch & her fiancé Jordan Hinze, Manitowoc; the light of his life: a grandson - Aiden Jon Michael Krause; his mother: Evelyn Meyer, Manitowoc; three sisters and brothers-in-law: Pat & Dan Johanek, Appleton, Marge & Lyle Ruthmansdorfer, Manitowoc, Mary Ellen & Gary Aschenbrenner, Manitowoc; two step brothers: John (Cindy) Meyer, Kellnersville, Jim (Kay) Meyer, Manitowoc; nieces and nephews: Kelly (Paul) Myrdal, Christopher (Kathryn) Koch, Lisa (Nathan) Forst, Michael Meyer, Jen (Luke) Hennessey (goddaughter), Sarah (John) Buck, Eric Ruthmansdorfer, Scott Ruthmansdorfer, and Jeremy (Missy) Aschenbrenner. Jon is further survived by his friend and mother of their children: Merry Koch, Manitowoc, dear friend: Lori, other relatives, fellow firefighters, many special friends, Roncalli High School Class of 1972 and his dog and best buddy: Maggie. He was preceded in death by his father: Harold H. Koch in 1964; a brother: Michael A. Koch in 1985; and his step-father: Al Meyer in 1984.

The family will greet relatives and friends at The Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, July 1, 2013. Friends may also call Tuesday morning at St. Francis of Assisi on Waldo, Manitowoc, from 9:30 a.m. until 11:15 a.m.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at St. Francis of Assisi on Waldo, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. David Beaudry with burial at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.
