Mr. Murphy was the only son of Senator R Louis Murphy (D-Iowa 1933-1936). He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1936 and from Loras College in 1940. He attended a year of law school before entering World War II in the Army Signal Corps in 1941. After the war he owned and operated the Murphy Advertising Company from 1946 to 1963.

He served as a member of the Democratic State Central Committee, was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1956 and attended President John F Kennedy's inauguration in 1961.

He was appointed as the 23rd postmaster of Dubuque in 1963. He retired as the postmaster in November 1990 after 27 years at the helm. This was the longest continuous service of any other Dubuque postmaster.

He also served as president of the Dubuque Chamber of Commerce for two terms, as county chairman of the American Cancer Society, and as chairman of its Iowa state campaign in 1951. He also served on the advisory board at Mercy Hospital and as chairman for the "Umbrella of Mercy" campaign.
