Former Neal resident honored at Mulvane

Ethel (Bartholomew) Howard graduated from Mulvane High School in 1911 as one of seven graduates who were all girls (the only time the entire senior class was made up of girls.) Ethel was honored Friday during ceremonies at the 100th Mulvane High School centennial. She was recognized officially and stood to a round of warm applause.

Ethel was also recognized as the oldest living teacher who has taught in the Mulvane school system. She began teaching at Star School in 1912 one year after graduating. Star School was a small country school near Mulvane. Ethel taught eight grades in that school. She got her teaching certificate from Emporia State Teacher's College.

Three years later she started teaching fourth grade in Mulvane. She taught the fourth grade for two years and them retired from teaching. She and her husband, Clifford Al bert Howard, farmed near Mulvane and Neal.

Born in Illinois, Ehtel moved to Kansas with her family when she was eight years old.

Ethel has noticed a lot of change in education since she got out of the profession.

To begin with, she had a big change when she moved from teaching at the country school (where she had 12-15 students) to teaching in town at Mulvane where she had about 31 students just in one grade.

Ethel thinks she would be "too dumb" to be a teacher in this day and age, but her friends and family believe that the nation could use more teachers like her - teachers who really train students in the basic foundations of education; learning to read and write, and learning to solve problems. They believe that there would be more graduates who would be able to read and write when they left school.

Ethel said that if young students really learn to read, then they have a good foundation to build on so that they can expand their knowlege in whatever they desire.

Ethel said she really appreciated the reception she got from the MHS alumni.

She was always close to the school and to the friends and loved ones who went through the school.

In addition to Ethel, three of the other seven girls who graduated in the 1911 class taught school in Mulvane. Ehtel is the only survivor from that special group.

Ethel also had three sons graduate from MHS. Floyd, Orine, and Wayne graduated in the early 1940's and then went through World war II.

Ethel said getting all the attention at the centennial Friday wasn't as hard as she thought it was going to be.

"I didn't have to do anything, just stand up!"

Ethel is a resident in Villa Maria in Mulvane. Her friends at the Villa were excited to see Ethel honored.
