AKA Henry Lee Stout

Andrew Jackson "Toad" Bowers was the son of William Christly Bowers and Rebecca ? (DeLoach or Alford.) According to family history, about 1900, Andrew J. Bowers killed a man in Tennessee and the family fled in the night to Virginia. The family changed its name from Bowers to Stout and Andrew Jackson Bowers assumed the name Henry Lee Stout for the rest of his life, although he kept the nickname "Toad." He didn't return to Carter County until his burial in the Bowers family cemetery in Siam.

HENRY LEE STOUT DIED THURSDAY

Henry Lee Stout, 64, died at his home in Appalachia last Thursday morning. He was a native of Elizabethton, Tenn. but had been residing in Big Stone Gap for the past forty years. He is survived by his widow, five children, Robert, Kate, Venie, and Green in Appalachia and Mrs. C. T. Garrison of Big Stone Gap, ten grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at the home Saturday afternoon by Rev. W. L. Brock. Interment was made in the Bowers Cemetery in Elizabethton.

H. L. STOUT
H. L. STOUT, of Appalachia, died at his home January 4th, at 1 a.m., after a long illness. He had a stroke of paralysis on Christmas day and steadily grew worse until the end.
He was a well known man of Appalachia. He made many friends. He came to this section about thirty years ago. When he first came he dealt in timber with J. C. MUNSEY.
His many friends regret to hear of his death. He told his family he was ready to meet his Savior.
Surviving him are his wife, five children, Bob, Green, Kate, Laureanie STOUT, of Appalachia; Mrs. C. T. GARRISON of Big Stone Gap, Va.
Funeral services were held at the home Friday, January 5th, at 3 p.m. by Rev. W. L. BROCK, pastor of the Baptist Church of Appalachia. The body was taken to Elizabethton, Tenn., his home town, for burial Saturday, January 6th, at 2 p.m.
