The daughter of John and Anna M. (Sheets) Hugo, Hazel was raised by her mother in New York State. She was adopted by Charles DeAngelis Marshall of Buffalo, New York in 1904, and became his heir. In January 1907 she married Raymond W. Koerner of Buffalo. They later divorced. In 1932 Hazel moved to California, where she built an estate on Amalfi Drive in Pacific Palisades.
