("From Whence Ye Came", 1981, Lela Carruth: edited information for Civil War service.) Civil War: Private, Co D, TX Calvary, 1 Feb 1862.After 18 months in the war, he was wounded, captured, taken to Chicago by box car to the northern army prison in Chicago. Because he suffered from frostbite of the feet, he promised to never again cross the Mason-Dixon Line.

He escaped prison by stealing a Yankee soldier's horse, and in shooting at him his horse was killed, but he hid in a corn field until the soldiers gave up the search. He traveled on foot, stopped by a well, and when a woman came out for water, he asked for food, and, she, being a southern sympathizer, helped him.

He stole another horse and got back to the South where he fought at an AR Post. Using muzzled loading guns, he wore down his teeth by pulling off the ends of powder and shot containers to load his gun.

Joshua's slave, Antney, who had had 3 previous owners, was more loyal and worthy than his value of $1000 in gold. He chose to stay on with the family while Joshua was serving in the war, and was killed while trying to save the family horses from being stolen by white men dressed as Indians...." ~~
