Civil War Union Soldier. Brevet Major General. Lawyer. When the 31st Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, was formed on June 22, 1861, he was selected major. While commanding the 141st Regiment, PVI, a part of the Army of the Potomac in 1863 and 1864, he was assigned by General Nelson A. Miles to command the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 2nd Corps. At the Battle of Gettysburg then Colonel Madill led his regiment, part of the Third Corps led by Major General David E. Sickles and later Major General David B. Birney. 151 of the 200 officers and men of the 141st died at the Peach Orchard making it the regiment suffering the highest percentage of fatalities of any at Gettysburg on the second day of battle. Madill also fought at Chancellorsville, the Wilderness, Spottsylvania, Cold Harbor, and the siege of Petersburg. At various times he was in command of the brigade. For his heroism at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, he was brevetted Brigadier General, December 2, 1864, and by special order of the President appointed to command a brigade. In charging a battery at the head of his brigade, he was wounded at Sutherland Station. He had also been wounded at Petersburg. On April 20, 1865, Madill was brevetted Major General by the president "for gallant and meritorious service." After the was he returned to his law practice, was elected Registrar and Recorder for the county, and even represented his region in the Pennsylvania Assembly.
