Edith "Edie" G. Bondi, 89, of Bridgeton, NJ, died early Wednesday morning June 5, 2013 at Millville Center - Genesis Elder Care where she had been a patient for the last 2-1/2 years.
She was born in Fairmount, WV and was the last surviving of 15 brothers and sisters who were born to Caleb Larken Rowand and Mary Jenetta(nee Showalter)Rowand. Born on December 31, 1923, she moved to the Bridgeton area to work at the former Owens-Illinois Glass Company. Shortly after her arrival, she met her husband, Henry John Bondi, who was a member of the U. S. Merchant Marine during World War II. They were married on July 8, 1945.
Mrs. Bondi worked in the cafeteria at Owens for 37 years before her retirement. Many would remember her from working at Uncle Al's doughnuts on N. Pearl St., Bridgeton.
She was a member of the former Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church and most recently the First United Methodist Church. She loved being a member of the local chapter of the Red Hat Society and enjoyed her role as a "fisherwoman" while fishing on the Delaware Bay with her husband. She also loved her dog, "Chipper."
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Chief John E. Bondi, BPD (ret.) and his wife Michele; one daughter, Linda G. Summers and her husband Lewis; 5 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren and 4 goddaughters.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service on Friday afternoon June 7th at 1 o'clock at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton, NJ
Pastor Elizabeth Mitchell of the First United Methodist Church and Pastor Woodson Moore of the Fairton Christian Center will officiate.
The burial will take place at Laurel Lawn Cemetery in Upper Deerfield Twp.
Friends will be received at the funeral home Thursday evening from 6-8 p. m. and also on Friday afternoon from 12 Noon until 1.
