Mina Mae Chittum, 88, a resident of Chillicothe, Missouri since 1940, died Thursday, June 27, 2013 at Morningside Center in Chillicothe. Mrs. Chittum was born on January 1, 1925 in Leavenworth, Kansas, the only child of Tilman Naylor Croskey and Irene Josephine Ray Croskey. On May 26, 1946, she married Brownie Lee Chittum who preceded her in death on March 12, 2003.
Mrs. Chittum is survived by son, Robert Kirk Chittum, and wife, Linda Carol Beaird Chittum of Willard, Missouri and daughter Kris Teena Daniel, Chillicothe, Missouri. She was loved by six grandchildren, Betsy Noel Lee, Melissa Carol Heil, Bryan Lee Chittum, Jonathan Todd Daniel, David Paul Daniel, Jr., and Ashley Blue Daniel. Mrs. Chittum also leaves twelve great-grandchildren, Shelby Chittum, Rebekah Dawn Lee, Cameron Lee, Elizabeth Heil, Tilman Heil, Alynn Heil, Ivy Chittum, Easton Chittum, Taylor Daniel, Beau Daniel, Mason Daniel and Allison Daniel and one great great grandchild, Alayna Daniel. Besides her parents and husband, Mrs. Chittum was preceded in death by a daughter, Jeffrie Lynn (Jalynn) Shackelford.
After graduating from Chillicothe High School in 1943, Mrs. Chittum moved to California where she worked in a factory which built black widow airplanes during World War II. She was employed at Sears and Roebuck in Chillicothe form 1960 to 1968, serving as assistant manager. Always creative and fun-loving, Mrs. Chittum taught decorative painting during the 1970's in her basement studio, "Mina's Cobweb Corner." During the 1980's her passion became genealogy, a hobby she enjoyed until her death. Over the years, she volunteered thousands of hours helping others search library and computer records for their ancestors. As Queen Mother of the Chillicothe Red hat Chicks, Mina loved to don her red hat and go out on the town.
She also volunteered for the Hedrick Medical Center Ladies Auxiliary, sewing hundreds of eye-glass holders for hospital patients. She was a long-time member of RSVP and a volunteer at the Livingston County Museum.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Livingston County Library Genealogy Department and left at the funeral home or mailed to Heritage Funeral Home, 3141 N. Washington, Chillicothe, MO.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at Heritage Funeral Home in Chillicothe.
A visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, in Chillicothe.
