John M. Potter was the 3rd child of Martin and Sarah A. Ballard Potter. John's two older sisters were named Margaret and Mary. Martin and Sarah's last name was changed sometime after their marriage from "Batdorf" to "Potter."

John married Hannah Leamy on November 20, 1873 in Newtown Baptist Parsonage, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. They had one child, John William Potter, born on April 6, 1876 in Berwyn in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Hannah died on July, 4, 1890.

On October 29, i894, John, then a widower, married Sarah S. Lewis in Berwyn in Chester County, Pennsylvania. John and Sarah had no children.
