Jerry Roy Hill was born November 25, 1946 in Guymon to Arthur Thomas and Nora E. (Peterson) Hill. He was raised south of Guymon at the Phillips Petroleum plant. The family moved to Guymon in 1962. Jerry graduated from Guymon High School in 1965 and then attended Oklahoma Panhandle State University until he graduated in 1970. During college he served in the ROTC program and consequently entered the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant. On July 9, 1970 Jerry married Laura Ellen DeSpain in Guymon, and two weeks later they were on their way to Ft. Benning, GA. He served three months of active duty in Georgia and then took an early release and served eight years in the active reserve.

Jerry worked several years at Memorial Hospital of Texas County as Assistant Administrator. After working at several local businesses, he finally found his niche as a teacher. He taught at Goodwell High School (where he was known affectionately as ‘Coach Hill'), Guymon Alternative Academy, and Guymon High School. He was an excellent educator and was much loved by students and fellow teachers. Students will remember some of his favorite sayings such as, "Life is full of choices." A lot of them will also remember his famous beef jerky.

Jerry attended Morning Star United Methodist Church for several years, but then came back to the First Christian Church of Guymon where he was a member. He will be remembered for his service to the church but especially for his candy-filled children's chats.

Jerry was very proud of his family and loved them very much. Being a grandpa was definitely the highlight of his life.

At the time of his death on July 7, 2013, Jerry had been preceded in death by his father, Arthur Thomas Hill; his precious grandson, Logan Nathaniel Miller; and his mother- and father-in-law, Opal and Ora DeSpain.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Laura; two daughters: Traci Dodgion of Guymon and Kara and husband, Steven Harrison of Angel Fire, NM; grandchildren: Tim and wife, Cara Dodgion, Becky Dodgion, and Ian Hill, and very special great-granddaughter, Emma Dodgion.
