Lucille Hollers Whitson departed this life on Saturday, January 29, 2011 about two weeks shy of her 89th birthday. She was born on February 11, 1922 and married the love of her life, William Douglas Whitson, on November 26, 1943, soon after he returned from combat in World War II.

She is preceded in death by her father, Wilmer Donald Hollers, her mother, Lula Mae Dorris Hollers, her sister, Helen Hollers McGovern, and a large number of dear and wonderful friends.

Lucille's greatest love was spending time with her family. She and Bill also spent time traveling to visit family in Austin, Kansas City, and Crested Butte and never tired of family members joining them for vacations, especially in their beloved motor home.

Traveling in the motor home brought great joy to Lucille and Bill for over 30 years. They visited almost every state in the U.S.—some more than once—including the big 1982 trip to Alaska. At one point, they even hitched two motorcycles to the motor home and rode them through the streets of San Francisco and other stops in their travels.

Lucille had so many wonderful friends throughout her life—mainly because she was such a true friend in return. She spent countless hours bringing food to friends in times of need, providing a shoulder to cry on, and sharing excitement in times of joy. Her home was always a place to welcome and entertain friends—from the annual Fourth of July Party to Wednesday Night Picnic and Travel Club. Her home was not only open to her friends but countless friends of her kids and grandkids. Many of these girls and boys thought of her as a second Mother—and still do.

Lucille had a wonderful life filled with love and happiness. We have no doubt that she's in heaven right now having a great big martini with Pinky Harpool and John Brooks!

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Lucille's honor to Meals on Wheels of Denton County, 1800 Malone Street, Denton, Texas 76201. Lucille spent many happy years bringing smiles and love to those she served on her Meals on Wheels route.

A celebration of Lucille's life will be held on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church Cole Chapel, 201 S. Locust, at 3:00 p.m. Refreshments will follow the service in Flynn Hall.
