US MARINE CORPS WORLD WAR II

Frank H Longmeyer Junior enlisted in the Marine Corps 17 April, 1943 from Missouri Valley, Iowa. Qualified Rifle Sharpshooter and completed recruit training in the 10th Recruit Training Battalion, MCB San Diego, CA. 16 July, 1944 promoted to Private First Class. 17-26 July, 1943 on furlough. 28 July, 1943 assigned to HQ Company, Signal Battalion, MCB San Diego, CA. During September 1943 assigned to 3rd Signal Company, Field Signal Battalion, Training Command, MCB Camp Pendleton, CA. Trained and designated a Wire Telephoneman (MOS 641).

20 January, 1944 assigned to Signal Company, HQ Battalion, 5th Marine Division, MCB Camp Pendleton, CA. Transferred to Weapons Company, 27th Marines, 5th Marine Division. 12 August, 1944 embarked USS George F Elliott (AP-13) at San Diego for movement overseas. 18 August, 1944 arrived at Hilo, Hawaii based at Camp Tarawa near Kamuela.

4 January, 1945 embarked USS Darke (APA-159). After landing rehearsals in the Hawaiian Islands and in port periods in Pearl Harbor left Hawaii 27 January, 1945. 5-7 February,1945 at Eniwetok, Marshalls. 11-16 February, 1945 in the Marianas.

19 February 1945 landed on Red Beach Two Iwo Jima D-Day and participated in combat operations until Killed in Action 12 March, 1945.

Next of Kin: Parents, Mr Frank H Senior and Mrs Emma F Longmeyer, 515 North 3rd Street, Missouri Valley, Iowa.

Initially buried in the 5th Marine Division Cemetery on Iwo Jima.

11 May, 1948 permanant burial in Missouri Valley, Iowa.
