William Howard Rosenbaum, Stockton, died at 10:20 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, in Stockton Nursing Home. He was 88 years, 2 months and 21 days old.

He was born May 21, 1914, to Boyd David Rosenbaum and Corda Ethel (Peach) Rosenbaum on a farm southwest of Stockton. He worked on the farm through his teen years. While only 19 years old, he went to California during the Depression to work during the harvest seasons.

He met the love of his life, Lillian Opal Bland, the school teacher at the Excelsior School, in 1939. Howard and Opal were married April 7, 1940. They lived on the farm the first year. The next year, both worked at the State Hospital in Nevada. Then they returned to the farm southwest of Stockton. He held the office of Cedar County treasurer for 20 years, with Opal assisting. Then they retired and moved into Stockton.

Howard was saved in a seven-week revival meeting at the Excelsior School in 1942. He and Opal were faithful members of the Church of God (Holiness) in Stockton.

Survivors include Opal, his loving wife of 62 years, of the Stockton Nursing Home; two brothers, Elda Rosenbaum and wife Marge of Stockton and Melvin Rosenbaum and wife Rosa Lee of Cane Hill; a brother-in-law, Clarence Garrigus of Independence; two sisters-in-law, Lorene Witt of El Dorado Springs and Fern Vilhauer and husband Norman of El Dorado Springs; and a host of nieces and nephews. Although Howard and Opal had no children of their own, a first cousin to Howard, Sam Rosenbaum, Jr., was like a son to them, and David and Timothy, his sons, were treated as their own grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Boyd and Corda Rosenbaum; a sister and brother-in-law, Mabel and Clyde Bough; a brother-in-law, Aubra Witt; a sister-in-law, Darlene Garrigus; and a niece and nephew, Jean Carol Bough and Donald Lee Bough.

Howard had a dry sense of humor. When one talked to him, he would usually have some sort of raptor comment to make. He liked to tease people and he liked to be teased back. He loved children and would do most anything for their benefits.

He was devoted to the word of God and spent hours and hours of study and thought in it. Very few people anywhere had a knowledge or insight greater than he had of God's word.

Howard will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday, Aug. 14) in Stockton Church of God (Holiness). Burial will be in Gum Springs Cemetery, south of Stockton, under direction of Brumback Funeral Home.
