While traveling with her parents as they were sheepherding in Fisher County, Texas, Arletta became ill, possibly with diphtheria. The family story goes that she died as she was being passed from one parent to the other. She was buried on the prairie. Her parents returned to Wichita County and purchased a headstone for her grave. Before they could return, however, they lost another child, Grace, and Arletta's headstone was placed on Grace's grave in the Beaver Creek Cemetery in Wichita County.
