James enlisted as a private 26 Dec 1863; joining Co. L, Maine 1st Artillery Regt. Mustered in on 28 Dec 1863. He was mustered out 19 Jan 1865 at Augusta, Me. with a surgeon's certificate.
From 1st Maine H.A. History, page 471, we learn his wounds are described as 'gunshot, right hip'.
In the "Stockton Springs Vital Records 1857-1891", (Parsons), page 441, "This will cirtify [sic] that the Marriage of Mr. James S. Crooker and Mifs Lucy A. Mahoney both of Stockton Maine was Solemnized Oct 5th 1861. By me Henry S Staples as Justice of the Peace and as Town Clerk.
From the same source, page 40, is recorded the birth of son Elmer P. on 13 Sept 1862 to James S. & L.A. Crooker.
Lucy appears in Stockton's 1870 census as a 29 year old mother to son Elmer E., then 7. The two are together again in Searsport's 1880 census, she at 38, he at 17, showing that she is widowed and a telepraph operator.
Both James & Lucy's names appear as parents on the 23 Oct 1867 Peabody, Mass. marriage record of their one known son Elmer, then a 24 year old station agent in Manchester to Nellie Elizabeth David (daughter of Charles & Elizabeth) of Peabody.
It appears Lucy died in 1929, which is recorded in Mass. Death Index, referring to Book 1, Page 385
