Bill Abbott was born on March 20, 1935 to Opal Gladys Jones and James Durwood Abbott in Paducah, Texas, but was raised in and around Southern California. He passed away peacefully on July 2, 2013 at home.


Bill was an honest, hard-working man, with a heart of gold. He worked many skilled labor jobs, including being a diesel mechanic.


He proudly served his country in the United States Army, stationed in Panama, later working for the Army Corp of Engineers as a civilian at Port Hueneme Naval Base refurbishing the equipment that came back from Vietnam. Later he was transferred to Bridgeport, Washington, to work at Chief Joseph Dam.


His hobbies included camping, fishing, hunting, gardening, and cooking. He also enjoyed serving others in any way that he could. His family and all who knew him loved and will miss him.


His oldest son, Jim Abbott, preceded Bill in death; surviving daughter-in-law Katharine Abbott; his wife of thirty-one years, Doris Abbott; his children, John Abbott, Dalia Cooley, Eugene Brandt, David Abbott and Nancy Henson, survive him. In addition, his ten grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, along with his brother, Clifford Abbott (Laurie), and his sister, Shirley Covert (Jim) are also his survivors. Also surviving is Bill's aunt Juanita Baetke, his uncle Harold Jones (Frances), along with numerous nieces and nephews.


Bill's viewing will be held at First Baptist Church of Merced, 500 Buena Vista Drive, Merced, on Thursday, July 11th, at 9:30am with a memorial service to follow at 10:30am.


His burial will be held at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, 32053 West McCabe Road, Santa Nella, on July 15th at 12:30pm with full military honors.


Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Whitton Family Funeral Services.
