Mrs. Doris Virginia Quarles Carter, affectionately known as "Big Mama," of Ettrick, departed this life July 11, 2005, at John Randolph Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

She was born April 29, 1919, to the late Irene and Walker Quarles Sr. She was a native of Richmond, VA, but resided in Ettrick for the past 37 years.

She graduated with honors from Armstrong High School in 1935 and Virginia Union University in 1943. She also attended Virginia State College receiving a Master's Degree in Education and completed several hours towards a Ph.D.

She taught in the Richmond Public School System for over 30 years, mostly at Armstrong High School and Benjamin Graves Junior High School, where she was head of the English department.

She was preceded in death by all 10 siblings; and one grandchild, Shameka McSwain.

She leaves to cherish precious memories one son, Walter Carter III; five grandchildren, Shareka Williams (Reginald), Tori Carter (Tanesha), Charmese Carter, Myesha Shepherd, and Joy Shepherd; two great-granddaughters, Amiya Crawford and Aliyna Carter; one unborn great-grandson, Aenaes Bowman; and a host of other relatives and friends, including, her nephew, Charles Wesson Jr.; and beloved Chihuahua, Mateo Kennedy Carter.

Remains were viewed at Ebenezer Baptist Church 12 noon Saturday, followed by funeral at 1pm. Dr. Levy M. Armwood Jr. officiated. Interment Woodland Cemetery.
