Carl Wright, 89, a widely known civic leader and businessman, died Thursday morning in Lakeland, Fla.
A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the Harbor Springs Presbyterian Church with the Rev, David Crow officiating. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery.
Mr. Wright was born June 6, 1880 at Centerville, Iowa and was graduated from Grinnell College in 1905.
He taught school at Franklin Academy in Franklin, Neb. before relocation at Harbor Springs in 1914.
Mr Wright was married to the former Hazel Wilson on June 1, 1910 in Knoxville, Iowa.
He is survived by his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Leland (Margaret) Gleysteen of West Chester, Pa.; Mrs. Wayne (Janet) Welch of Wheatridge, Col.; Mrs. Charles (Catharine) Carns of Tacoma, Wash.; one son J. Robert of Harbor Springs, 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Mr. Wright was president of the Harbor Springs board of education for 20 years, of the 21 years he served on the board; a life member of the Masons; a charter member of the Harbor Springs Kiwanis Club and treasurer of the Harbor Springs Christian Association.
Recognized as one of the area's most avid Detroit Tigers baseball fans he was considered an erudite student of the game of baseball.
For many years he visited the Tigers spring training camp in Florida and compiled a "book" on every player in the Detroit organization.
He held a lifetime season's pass to all American League baseball games signed by Joe Cronin, president of the loop.
When Mr. Wright came to Harbor Springs on March 1, 1914 he purchased the Charles Robinson Lumber Company and renamed it the Ottawa Lumber Company.
Mr. Wright was honored by his college alumni association in 1960. He met all but one of the Grinnell College presidents.
In addition to his baseball interests, Mr Wright had a "green thumb" and enjoyed gardening.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Memorial Fund of the Harbor Springs Presbyterian Church or to the (Harbor Springs Christian) Library Association. Mr Wright was a member of the Harbor Springs Presbyterian Church for 56 years.
