Davis man dies as train rams his SUV
DAVIS -- A Davis man was killed about 9:15 a.m. Monday when his sport-utility vehicle was hit by an eastbound Amtrak train at a crossing on Arboretum Terrace, just southeast of the UC Davis campus.
Arboretum Terrace is a short country lane. The crossing is marked with warning signs but does not have warning lights, crossing arms and similar safety features.
The dead man was identified by Yolo County coroner's officials as Robert Barry Landy, 41, of Davis.
Landy operated a business nearby and knew the road. For unknown reasons he attempted to cross the tracks as the train approached, said Officer Willy Williford, spokesman for the California Highway Patrol's Solano County office.
"It takes a quarter-mile to stop an Amtrak train," Williford said. "The train struck the vehicle and pushed it about 600 feet down the track."
