Dorothy Evelyn Stuckey, 85, died at her home near Monroe City on July 2, 2005, after an extended illness.

Dorothy was born into a strong family on Oct. 2, 1919, the fourth of eight children raised by I.V. and Belle Fox Chattin on a farm in Decker Township. Dorothy's siblings were Dr. Herbert Chattin, Virginia Thomas, Clifford Chattin, Harold Chattin, Howard "Pete" Chattin, Belle Kasting and Donnie Chattin. Clifford and Belle survive.

Dorothy graduated from Decker Chapel High School in 1937 and continued her education at the Good Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing, graduating as a registered nurse in 1940. Dorothy became a fixture as an "old time nurse" at Good Samaritan Hospital and served as the Head Nurse on the fifth floor from the opening of the Columbian Towers until her retirement in 1982. Affectionately referred to as "Sarge" for running a tight ship, Dorothy was a fierce advocate for her patients and staff.

Dorothy married E. Hoyt Stuckey on Nov. 21, 1942. They moved to rural Monroe City in 1950 and soon set down deep roots, raising their three sons in the South Knox Community. Dorothy was a stalwart in the Monroe City Methodist Church, serving as President of the United Methodist Women Society and as a tireless church worker. Dorothy and Hoyt had been married 57 years when Hoyt died on April 22, 2000.

Dorothy was an avid gardener and could been seen tending to her roses and garden when she was well into her 80's. Dorothy was also passionate about her family and particularly her grandchildren. She and Hoyt were typically the first to arrive and the last to leave as they traveled the country to watch their grandchildren participate in a variety of sports and activities.

Dorothy is survived by her sons, Kenneth and his wife, Marilyn of Lylnchburg, Va., Curtis and his wife, Brenda of Nachodoches, Texas, and Brent and his wife, Becky of Vincennes. She also has eight grandchildren, Julie, Christopher, Joshua, Ginny, Zachary, Katie and Maggie Stuckey and Sarah Burton; and three great-grandchildren, Joel and Olivia Stuckey and Anna Burton.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Goodwin Family Funeral Home. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Monroe City United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery in Daviess County.

Memorial donations may be made to the E. Hoyt and Dorothy Stuckey South Knox Scholarship Fund of the Knox County Community Foundation.
