John was the son of Edward Worthington Dorsey and Eleanor Elizabeth Brown, and the grandson of Captain John Worthington Dorsey and Comfort Worthington, Moses Brown and Mary Snowden.

John and his brother Thomas Beale Dorsey were among the Tuolumne County Pioneers, emigrants who came to Tuolumne through Sonora Pass by means of the Walker River Trail in 1854.
