MONONA — Marjorie K. Verthein, age 88 of Monona, died on Saturday, December 23, 2000, at her home. She was born on May 21, 1912, in Brussels, Wisconsin, the daughter of Dr. John and Josephine (LeGrave) Murphy. She graduated from Brussels High School and Normal School in Algoma, receiving her teaching degree. She taught school in a 'One Room School House,' grades 1-8, in Forestville. She met Norbert Verthein in Madison while attending a teachers convention. Marjorie and Norbert courted and then married on June 26, 1937. Together they bought a home in Monona where she lived for 60 years. Norb and Marj were charter members, one of thirteen, of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Monona. They raised four children, with Norb working for 34 years, before retiring from Chicago Northwestern Railroad in 1975. Marjorie established a furniture upholstering business that she ran out of her home for 25 years, supplementing income for the household and college expenses for the children. Having been instilled with a strong belief in the value of education by her parents, she carried that through to her children. Her three daughters all became school teachers, also two granddaughters became school teachers. Her son works as a commercial banker. Marjorie was a member of the Northwestern Women's Club, Ladies Society of Immaculate Heart of Mary, and a member of the Belgium American Club. Survivors include four children, Joyce (James) Huber, Susan (Mortimer) Huber, Norberta (Myron) Paynter, and John (Jeanne) Verthein; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jeanne Lamsam of Rochester, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Norbert N. Verthein on November 26, 1984; a sister, Marion Baudhuin in 1965; and a brother, Aaron Murphy in 2000.
