Martin D. McDermott
80, of Indianapolis, died on December 30, 2012. He was born in Indianapolis on January 28, 1932 to Russell and Cecelia McDermott. Marty attended St. Joan of Arc Catholic School and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1950. He attended Georgetown University, before transferring to Marian University, where he became the first male graduate. Marty served in the U.S. Marine Corps for four years as 2nd lieutenant. He was a member of the Draft Board's Selective Service Committee.
Marty was proud owner of Martin Fine Furniture, division of M. Clune Co. Inc., The oldest furniture business in Indiana located at 5420 US 31 South. The business was founded in 1854. The business is known for its fun and witty TV advertisements that featured Marty and his wonderful character. He was a member of Cathedral High School Board of Trustees where he was given the Outstanding Service Award. He was past president of the Northside Democrat Club and a member of St. Luke Catholic Church. He was given a key to the City of Indianapolis by Mayor Bill Hudnut. He loved swimming and won metals competing in the Senior Olympics. Marty served as a voluntary Board member for Crooked Creek Multi Service center for many years and the Concord Center for 25 years.
He was preceded in death by wife, Jean Holt McDermott and brother, Russell "Bo" McDermott. Marty is survived by daughter, Catherine (Alan) McClure; son, Martin (Sandy) McDermott, III; son, John (Anne) McDermott; daughter, Suzanne (Charles) Sherman; son, William (Lisa) McDermott; son, Russell McDermott; daughter, Jean (Jeff) Cratty; daughter, Vivian Getz; brothers, Kenneth and Clune McDermott; 16 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Family and friends will gather on Thursday, January 3, 2013 from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Leppert Mortuary, Nora Chapel . Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 4, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Luke Catholic Church.
