The son of George & Magdalena (Reisinger) Blessing, in 1860 he was a farm laborer living in Hellam Township, York County, Pennsylvania. He married Rebecca Margaret Dietz and fathered Jacob D. (b. 03/25/63), George (b. 03/16/65), Henry (b. 09/10/66), Mary (b. @1869), Magdalena (b. 06/??/71 - married William H. Markey), Peter D. (b. 11/16/75), Sarah A. (b. 04/30/79 - married a Gehley), John (b. 01/14/81), and Albert (b. 10/16/83).

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in York County November 10, 1862, mustered into federal service at York November 12 as a private with Co. G, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), but deserted November 22 before the regiment ever left York. There is no record of him being apprehended.

In 1880, he lived in Spring Garden Township, York County, and by 1900, in Lower Windsor Township, York County, where he died from "chronic cystitis" with "paralysis" a contributing factor.
