Mary M. Carter, 88, Anderson, died Jan. 27, 2011, at Community Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born May 7, 1922, in Scircleville, and had resided in Anderson since 1941.

She had retired from Goehring's World of Fashion.

Mary was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Friendship Circle and actively involved in various church activities. She had volunteered at Saint John's Medical Center for 14 years, serving on the Victoria Guild Board and Council and on the pricing crew for the Saint John's Gift Shop. She was also a member of Lady Elks and The Women's Art League of Madison County.

She is survived by three children, Sherry Bump of Columbus, Ohio, Steve Carter (Carol) of Calgary, Canada, and Debbie Webb (David) of Anderson; six grandsons, Geoff Bump (Marla), Greg Bump (Marion), Andy Carter (Debi), Scott Carter (Tracy), Zach Webb and Ian Webb; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and her very dear friend, Dr. James Pierce.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederic D. Carter, whom she married May 16, 1940; parents, Arthur and Eva Batts; and seven brothers and sisters.

A celebration of Mary's life will be at 10 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Donna Goings officiating. Entombment will be in Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Victoria Guild or First United Methodist Church.
