Arnold was the son of Joseph Leo and Anna Philomena Leytem Green. Born in Garry Owen he was the brother of Ted, Virgina, Loras, Joseph Jr., Estelle, Bob, Claude, Oscar, Mary Josephine, and Charlie.

He grew up on his parents farm. He served in World War II, fighting in the Pacific and serving in Japan during the occupation following the war.

On January 29, 1947 he married Lois Reuter at St. Joseph's Church in Key West. He and Lois had four sons and four daughters: Melvin, Edward, JoAnn, Clifford, Barbara, Joseph, Karen, and Mary. They had 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren at his passing.

Arnold operated a dairy farm about 10 miles south of Dubuque for many years, raising his children with Lois on the farm. Arnold enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Arnold was a member of the Farm Bureau, Holy Family Church and American Legion Post #528 of Cascade.
