Oroville
January 30, 1924-June 17, 2009
Betty Jean Barnes a longtime resident of Oroville, Wash. passed away on June 17, 2009 in Wenatchee, Wash. after a short illness.

Born to Leon and Ruth Swegle on January 30, 1924, Betty was raised on a ranch located on Mary Anne Creek east of Molson, Wash. where she attended grade school in the Molson school house. As her sister Barbara put it, "Betty was a tomboy; she loved to work outside with dad while I was working in the kitchen with mother. She loved working with the animals and riding her black horse "Coalie" all around the Highlands".

The family moved to Spokane, Wash. in 1936, living in both Spokane and Otis Orchards. Betty attended and graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane, Wash., after which she attended Kinman Business College in Spokane, Wash. studying bookkeeping.

The family moved back to the Okanagan Valley to live in Tonasket, Wash. where she worked for her father at the CoOp. Betty met the love of her life, Glen Barnes, while he was home on leave from the Army Air Corp. After the war Glen and Betty were married and began a wonderful life together. Both were members of the Tonasket Eagle Aerie, Betty was also a past president of the lady Eagles. While living in Tonasket Betty gave birth to two of their three sons, Mitch and Pat. After moving to Oroville, Betty gave birth to the youngest of their three sons, Brett.

While living in Oroville Glen and Betty made many lifelong friends, they owned and operated a number of businesses. In 1965 Glen and Betty made the decision to move their family to Ellensburg, Wash., where they purchased the Hitching Post Tavern which Glen ran and Betty did the bookkeeping while also working as a school secretary in the Ellensburg School District.

Three years later, in 1968, Betty lost the love of her life, her husband Glen, in an automobile train accident while living in Ellensburg, Wash. Betty "one man woman" who had married her "love" and never seemed to want another. After her husband's death Betty managed the Hitching Post and continued to work for the school district.

In 1970 Betty moved the family back to Oroville where she got a job as office manager/bookkeeper at North Star Fruits where she worked for many years while raising her three boys. Betty always supported her boys in their activities and many will remember her voice as she sang the Star Spangled Banner and rooted her sons on from the bleachers. Betty loved to play bridge with her "Bridge club ladies", she loved to watch Seahawks football, Mariner baseball and Freddy Couples play golf.

Betty was preceded in death by her father, Leon; her mother, Ruth; and her loving husband, Glen. Betty is survived by her sister, Barbara, of Post Falls Idaho; her three sons, Mitchell and Kim, Patrick and Lori, Brett and Shannon, of Wenatchee, Wash.; and by her grandchildren; and great grandchildren.

Betty was very much loved and will be very much missed by all that knew her.
