Eugene (Gene) E. Bollinger, 78, of Laureldale, passed

away Friday, July 12th at home with his wife and son surrounding him. He suffered a 34-month very courageous battle with lung cancer.

He was the husband of Barbara A. (Shalter) Bollinger. Born in Hyde Crest, Reading, he was the son of the late Edward C. and Cora S. (Strunk) Bollinger.

As a teenager, Gene worked at the Reading Fairgrounds Skating Rink, where he became the PA Junior Speed Skating Champion. He left Muhlenberg High School at the age of 16 to join the Navy, where he spent four years during the Korean War on the USS Amphion. That is where he completed his high school education and learned the welding trade. He was not just an ordinary welder, he was an Ace.

After being discharged, he and Barb were married in 1956 and spent 57 years together.

He was employed at Western Electric, which became AT&T and later became

Lucent Technologies. He served on the executive board of The IBEW Local 1898. After 35 years of

service, he retired in 1991 at age 56.

Gene loved automobile racing. He built several cars for the Pleasant Hills #57, and was the original welder for RTS Chassis. He had many hobbies, golf being his favorite, having eight holes in one at different courses. He also enjoyed snowmobiling, motorcycling and fishing.

For the past 21 years, he and Barb enjoyed spending their winters in their Florida home in Ft. Meade, where he was a life member of the VFW and American Legion. They enjoyed 19 cruises, including Alaska and Hawaii.

Gene was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Laureldale and attended The First Church of God in Ft. Meade.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Bradley Bollinger, Leesport; his granddaughter, Cora Bollinger, and his father-in-law, Jonathan L. Shalter III. His brother, Barry Bollinger of Reading, also survives him.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Walter R. Christ Funeral Home, Inc., 3300 Kutztown Road, Laureldale. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the services.
