JAMES NEWTON SHAFTER was born 7 Jul 1841 in Galesburg, Michigan, to parents Hugh Morris Shafter and Elizabeth Eliza Sumner.

MILITARY: CAPTAIN US ARMY CIVIL WAR (UNION). He was commissioned 1st Lt. of Company B, 17th Regiment US Colored Infantry, on 24 Oct 1864. He was mustered out 25 Apr 1866.

Married to HELEN FOOTE 1864. They had 2 daughters: Mollie G. Shafter (1865-1959) and Jessie Shafter (1869-1942). He also had 2 subsequent marriages.

He died 20 Nov 1925 in DeKalb County, IL. According to (*SFNC Interment Control Forms), his ashes/cremains were buried in the same grave as his sister-in-law, brother's wife, Harriet A. Shafter, at San Francisco National Cemetery, and adjacent to his brother, William Rufus Shafter, a Brevet Major General in the US Army.
