In the 1850 census, Alexander (10) was living with his father, Silas (33) and siblings in Cooper, Washington County, Maine. Children were Sarah (17), Julian (15), Solomon (14), John Fairfield (11), Silas Goodwin (6), Simon F. (4), and Hezekiah Freeman (2).

By 1860, the family was living in Presque Isle, Maine. Silas was married to Lydia (25). Children in the home were John (21), Alexander (19), Cyrena (18), Goodwin (16), Simon F. (14), Hezekiah Freeman (12), Nancy (7), Charles (4), Abram (2), and Cleora (3 months).

In 1870, Alexander was 28 and was married to Matilda Whittaker (27). Children in the home were Wallace (4), and Enoch (3), and George Whittaker (11).
