S.W. Lankford Sr. Dies; Retired Farmer, Politician

Franklin - Samuel Winfield Lankford Sr., 76, widely known retired farmer of this community and husband of the late Mrs. Clara Cotton Lankford, died late Wednesday afternoon in Raiford Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

He was a son of James I. and Mrs. Sarsh Elizabeth Barnes Lankford of Southampton County. He was a member of Sycamore Baptist Church and its board of trustees. He was a former member of the Democratic Executive Committee of Southampton County.

Surviving are five sons, Samuel W. Lankford, Jr. of Norfolk; Hudson R. Lankford, Willialm E. Lankford and Aubrey Lankford, all of Franklin, and Royce B. Lankford of Nashville, N.C.; four daughters, Mrs. Harry A. Walker, Mrs. W.H. Thompson and Mrs. Sam B. Woods, all of Norfolk, and Mrs. Benjamin B. Bland of Richmond; 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two sisters, Mrs. J.L. Eley Sr., and Mrs. Hunter Darden Sr., both of Franklin, and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at W.J.M. Holland and Sons Funeral Chapel Friday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Thomas E. Downing, pastor of Sycamore Baptist Church, and the Rev. Vivian Evans, pastor of Riverside Baptist Church, Portsmouth. Burial will be in Poplar Spring Cemetery.

Funeral services for Samuel W. Lankford, 76, retired farmer who died Wednesday, were conducted Friday afternoon a 2 p.m. at the Holland Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Thomas E. Downing, pastor of Sycamore Baptist Church, assisted by the Rev. Vivian Evans, pastor of Riverside Baptist Church, Portsmouth.

Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Pallbearers were Samuel W. Lankford, Jr., Hudson R. Lankford, Aubrey Lankford, William E. Lankford, Royce B. Lankford, Hunter Darden, Jr., Clyde Eley and Jesse Frank Vaughan.
