MORGANTON-Velma Allen Fitzgerald Crump, 84, of Morganton, North Carolina, passed away Saturday, December 22, 2001, after an extended illness.

Born November 8, 1917, in Burnsville, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Jennings Allen and Mattie Lou Wheeler Allen. She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband John Howard Fitzgerald, Cadillac, Michigan, brother Bryan "Bob" Allen, of Lansing, Michigan, and sister, Lenora Caldwell of Indianapolis, Indiana, and step-son, Hugh Crump of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Velma, a graduate of Western Michigan University with a Masters of Social Work degree, retired from a career in social work in the late 1990's. Her career and volunteer work spanned many decades of service as a social worker for the state of Michigan, the Salvation Army of Glendale, California, and Burke United Christian Ministries, in North Carolina. As an active member of Zion Baptist Church in Morganton, NC, she taught Sunday School, was active in the Women's Circle and served on the Library Committee. An avid genealogist, she was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Order of the Eastern Star, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She is the author of the book, The Mountain Years, 1917 to 1929, the story of her youth.
