Born in Woumen in the Western Flanders region of Belgium, Alois (Aloys) was the last of thirteen children born to Ambroise Francis Tanghe and Amelia Virginia Beauprez. He immigrated to the United States 29 March 1910 aboard the Kroonland with his brother Pieter with both listing their vocations as farmers. He worked as a hired man for various farmers in the Illinois/Iowa area of the Quad Cities. He met and eventually married Alice De Volder on 20 May 1914 in Rock Island. They had two daughters, Margaret and Irene.

Alois passed at a young age from a heart attack leaving behind his wife and two young daughters.
