ARCHIE DEAL ~ Open House Planned

An open house to celebrate the 100th birthday of Archie Deal will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 162 Woodlane St., off Hayden Bridge Road in Springfield.

Deal was born to Belle and John Deal on Oct. 26, 1891, at Storm Lake, Iowa. He married Erma Wedge when he was 18 years old, and they had a son, Stanley, who died as a young boy.

The couple lived in Montana, and later in Williston, N.D., where they homesteaded. Twice they went up to the wheat fields of Canada, and Erma Deal cooked for the crews.

During his working years, Deal held a variety of jobs, including work in the woods of Washington, in a fish hatchery and in a silver and gold refinery in Idaho.

In California, he worked in the oil fields at Signal Hill in Long Beach. He spent many years in the Junction City area where he worked for a contractor building houses.

After his wife died in 1957, Deal worked in taverns in Junction City, Monroe and Harrisburg. He lived in Harrisburg for 11 years until he moved to current residence, a Springfield foster-care home, about a year ago.

Friends are welcome to drop in at the birthday celebration.

RAMBLIN' MAN SETTLES IN AT 100

Archie Deal's body odometer turns over to triple digits today, and his friends have planned a reception at the Springfield foster care home where the 100-year old lives.

"I'm looking forward to it," Deal says of the party. "But I won't be getting out my roller skates to take a spin."

Deal is settled in at the foster home, but he hasn't spent much time in any one place during his long life.

Born in Storm Lake, Iowa, on Oct 26, 1891, he married young, in 1908. Erma preceded him in death in 1957, after a long paralysis through which her husband cared for her.

Before that, the Deals worked around the country, form a homestead in North Dakota to the Bunker Hill silver and gold refinery in Kellogg, Idaho, to the oil fields of Long Beach, Calif., and the wodds near Astoria. In the construction industry Deal Built Willamette Valley homes and worked on the Hoover Dam.

Deal also tried farming near Lorane and did stints cleaning furniture, fumigating orange trees and working for the C & H Sugar Company.

The centenarian worked until he was 80 years old.

"I could always get a job," Deal says, "I wasn't a master mechanic or anything, but I knew enough to do whatever I was doing,"

Deal's first job was a waiter -- 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. -- and he never missed a day. His turn-of-the-century paycheck: $45 a month.

The Bunker Hill work was the best, he says. He worked his way through the refinery, eventually having tried every job except foreman

"I took a soldier's place and I got promoted," Deal says. But when the draftee came back from World War I in 1918, Deal was out of a job.

Deal says there is no secret to his longevity. His doctors once asked that he hush up his 25-year long smoking consumption of three packs a day; he vows he has quit.

Eyesight, which once cost him a job at the federal mint, has continued to deteriorate, and his legs pain him a bit. But otherwise his health is fine, and Deal says he is ready for at least a few more years.

Several of his young pals, folks in their 70s, are expected to drop by today. An old girlfriend might com by, he says, as well as his few remaining relatives.

Deals friends are invited to the party, from 1 to 3 p.m. today at the foster home, 162 Woodlane Drive. On the surprise entertainment list, a belly dancer.
"We hope he can take it" says a nurse.
