To her fellow Marines, Gunnery Sgt. Diana Boné was known as "Mom."

"She was a caregiver and she helped everyone that she could," said Yvonne Tessitore, Boné's sister.

Boné, a Syracuse native, was an active duty Marine and completed two tours in Afghanistan. Boné, 35, died July 12 from a brain aneurysm. She will be laid to rest Monday in Baldwinsville.

"She had so much strength," Tessitore said. "She was an outgoing, fun and loving person."

Boné and her husband, John Boné, lived in California on a military base. She was the mother of five children whose ages range from 5 to 14 years old.

"She was an amazing mother," Tessitore said.

Boné, whose maiden name was Sochia, attended Marcellus and Henninger high schools. Tessitore, Boné's younger sister, said Boné joined the Marines because she was "messing up" in school and wanted to make a change in her life. Boné graduated from Marine Corps basic training at Parris Island, S.C., in 1997.

"She fell in love with the Marines," Tessitore said.

When Boné was serving in Afghanistan, Tessitore said her family, who still lives in Syracuse, would constantly pray for her safety. The family was shocked by Boné's death.

Tessitore said she is hiding her pain and trying to stay strong for her family. Boné is survived by two other sisters and her parents, Donald and Sandra Sochia, of Syracuse.

Calling hours for Boné will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the Word of Life Assembly of God, 12 E. Oneida St., Baldwinsville. The funeral will follow the calling hours. A military burial will follow at the Riverview Cemetery in Baldwinsville.
