Samuel M. Mitchell, aged 78, a resident of Monroe county during his entire life, died at 4:30 p. m. Friday at the Bloomington hospital, from a complication of diseases peculiar to advanced age. He had been ill in the hospital for the past several weeks.

Mr. Mitchell for many years operated a farm south of the city, near Smithville, but had retired on account of his age. He was born in this county. He was a staunch adherent of the Republican party, and as long as he was able took part in the active party work. He was a devout member of the First Christian church.

Surviving relatives are one daughter, Mrs. Charles Emery, south Walnut street; three sons, Dr. G. L. Mitchell, of Smithville, D. C. Mitchell, of Harvey, Ill., seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His wife died in 1921.

Funeral services will be conducted from the Allen funeral home at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon by the Rev. W. E. Moore, and interment will be in the Clear Creek cemetery. Pallbearers are John Dillman, Lee Mathers, J. O. Campbell, Frank Dillman, Elmer Dillman and W. W. Weaver.

The body lies in state at the Allen funeral home.
