First Deputy Superintendent James J. Riordan was shot and killed when he confronted Iowa police officer, Leon Washington, an intoxicated person who was creating a disturbance. Deputy Superintendent Riordan was attending a dinner at a Marina Towers restaurant when the incident occurred. Deputy Riordan entered the restaurant and noticed "a man harassing two women in a bar." He asked the man to join him outside to resolve the issue. Washington shot Riordan three times in the chest and neck with a .380 caliber handgun. James died at Northwestern Memorial Hospital while in the operating room. The gunman was arrested, convicted. Leon Washington was sentenced to thirty-five years in prison and was paroled on 10 April 1998 after serving less than half his sentence. Deputy Superintendent Riordan served with the agency for thirty-four years. He was survived by his wife and seven children. Five of his children are now police officers.

Funeral Wednesday, 9 a.m. from Lain-Hursen Funeral Home, 5501 N. Ashland Ave., to St. Gertrude Church. Mass at 10 a.m. Interment Calvary. In lieu of flowers, masses would be preferred. Superintendent Riordan was named the 1981 Man of the Year by the Emerald Society of Illinois. Visitation Tuesday, from noon until 10 p.m. 561-2645.
