He was the son of William and Isabella C. (Lecky) Cunningham and married Mala Kelso - 17 May 1887 - Lincoln Co., Tennessee. His obituaries follow:

Mr. Robert L. Cunningham, aged about 68 years, died at his home in Knoxville Sunday morning, May 20, 1928. He was born and reared around Cullman, Alabama, and his young manhood was spent in Fayetteville, and he was engaged in the dry goods business. He was married to Miss Mala Kelso, daughter of Mr. F. M. Kelso, and two sons and two daughters blessed the union. Mr. Cunningham was a member of the Presbyterian Church and always led an honorable Christian life.

R. L. Cunningham Dies Of Illness -
Funeral of Former Advertising Manager of George's Tuesday --

The funeral of Robert Leck Cunningham, 67, who died at 3 a.m. Sunday at his home, 3501 Kingston Pike, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the residence. The Rev. Clifford E. Barbour, of Second Presbyterian Church, will officiate.

Mr. Cunningham had been suffering for some time from heart disease. Recently he retired from the position of advertising manager of S. H. George and Sons, which he had held for several years.

He was formerly advertising manager of the Knoxville Journal and Tribune, and held a brokerage connection to New York afterward.

Mr. Cunningham was born in Cortland, Alabama in 1861, of Scotch-Irish ancestry. His father was an Elder in the Presbyterian Church for 40 years. The family moved south from Baltimore just after the Civil War. He attended private schools and completed his education at the University of Alabama. He married Miss Mala Kelso, daughter of General and Mrs. F. M. Kelso of Fayetteville, Tennessee, and sister of the late Dr. Henry J. Kelso. In 1892, Mr. and Mrs. Cunningham moved to Knoxville.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Dr. Henry Kelso Cunningham and R. Douglas Cunningham of Knoxville; two daughters, Mrs. Alfred M. Shook, Jr., and Mrs. Prince De Bardeleben, of Birmingham; one brother, William Alexander Cunningham, of Nashville; three nephews, William Edward of the Atlanta Journal; Robert Edwards, Editor, Denton (Texas) Chroicle; and Major Alexander Cunningham, U. S. Army, Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia.

Active pallbearers will be Joseph Knaffl, Charles C. Cullen, Allen McMillan, Dr. R. P. Oppenheimer, Dr. Richard McIlwaine, and B. A. Morton. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. W. R. Cochrane, Edward Ogden, Albert George, Alfred Sanford, Curtis Johnson, and Myron G. Chambers.

Mrs. Prince DeBardeleden and Mrs. Alfred M. Shook reached Knoxville yesterday, having been called home by the illness and death of their father, R. L. Cunningham. Dr. H. K. Cunningham was expected to reach Knoxville this afternoon from New York.
