A. J. Snavely

Andrew Jackson Snavely, who passed to the great beyond last week, was one of the old timers of the Lander Valley where he lived for nearly thirty years.

He was born in Ohio on the 16th day of April 1833. Here he spent his boyhood days and obtained all the schooling which was possible in the then frontier state. When he reached early manhood he moved westward and settled in Martinsville, Illinois where he went into business and where he continued to reside for twenty years. It was in this Illinois town where he was married on Oct. 26 1851 to Elizabeth Cook. Eleven children blessed their home of this children, six are living.

Sickness in the family, which removed four of the children, caused the family to seek free healthy air of the mountains and they removed to Denver in 1871 where they lived until they came to Lander valley in 1883.

Being impressed with the future possibilities of this country he took up a homestead on the Bit Popo-Agie river and has ever since been a firm believer in the future greatness of this valley. He lived on his homesteads until twelve years ago when the angel of death, closed the eyes of his helpmate. The death of his wife, broke his ambition and he came to Lander and made his home with his daughter Mrs. W. A. Feiser at whose home he closed his eyes in their last sleep.

Mr. Snavely was a member of the Old Settlers Union, but belonged to no other Organization. He was an ardent follower of that illustrious leaders whose name he bore and a sincere democrat but sought no office although his party forced him to serve as county commissioners while living in Illinois.
