Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the Wickenburg Chapel for William Leftridge Saunders, pioneer Arizonan and a resident of Congress for the past few months. Mr. Saunders died at his home in Congress last Friday morning. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Ray A. Ford of the Assembly of God Church and burial took place in the Wickenburg Cemetery.
Born in Austin, Tex., June 22, 1869, Mr. Saunders came to Arizona in the early 1900's and found employment as a government trapper a means of livelihood he followed for many years and in many sections of the state. In northern Arizona, in the White Mountains and Mogollon Rim country, he was widely known as "Baldy Bill." He became a fervent prospector and his mining claims extended from the Little Colorado to Mexico.
Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Mary Jane Saunders, seven sons, and five daughter, most of them are living in Arizona. The sons are Edgar, William and Charles, all of Congress; John of La Mesa, Calif., Leonard of Prescott, Sam of Flagstaff and Abe, with the U.S. Navy. The daughters are Mrs. Rice Peters and Mrs. Hayden Hawkins of Phoenix; Mrs. Frank Lyman of Congress, Mrs. Pete Savage of Glendale and Mrs. George Brunson of Globe. A sister, Mrs. Louisiana Bacon of Perry, Okla., also survives as well as 27 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
