SUMMITVILLE - Roger L. Jessup, age 77, of Summitville, IN died the morning of Friday, June 9, 2006 in his home after and extended illness.

He was born in Grant County on February 23, 1927 to the late Donald and Elizabeth (Leach) Jessup. He graduated from Fairmount High School in 1946. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Purdue University School of Agriculture in 1950. In 1952 he received his Masters Degree from Ball State University Department of Education Teachers College. From 1975-1982 he attended the Indiana University School of Education for Continued Post Graduate Work.

He served in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict from 1951-1952 at Camp Atterbury, IN.

He was a Grant County farmer for over 51 years and the owner of Jessup Farm Services from 1956-1973.

He was director of a human resource development project for Mississinewa Community Schools and Indiana Department of Employment and Training Services.

He had previously been a Dean of Boys, Jones Junior High School; Science Teacher, Jones Junior High School; in Marion Community Schools after teaching Vocational Agriculture for 16 years in Blackford and Grant County Schools.

He was elected to the Indiana House of Representatives in 1967. He served three terms in the House until being elected to the State Senate in 1972 where he served until 1989. During his time in office he served on the Ways and Means Committee, Education Committee, Agriculture Committee, Small Business Committee, Senate Finance Committee, Budget Sub-Committee, Public Policy Committee and the Interstate Co-op Committee, he was chairman of the Roads and Transportation Committee.

He was a member of the Fairmount Friends Church, the Grant County Tax Payers Association, and a 50 year member of the American Legion Post #313, an Masonic Lodge #635, both of Fairmount, IN.

He attended the National Conference of State Legislatures multiple years. He received the "Sagamore of the Wabash" Award November 2, 1984 and the "Kentucky colonel" Award April 30, 1985.

He enjoyed traveling through several states in the U.S., and the country of Mexico, and the Caribbean Islands.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Geraldine (Mitchener) Jessup; 2 daughters, Rita Ann (Larry) Shreve of Albany, IN and Mary Elizabeth Jessup, Indianapolis, IN; one son, William (Lynne) Jessup, Fairmount, IN; 2 grandchildren, Jeffrey and Sarah Jessup, Fairmount, IN; 2 sisters, Rosemary (Robert) Swift, Camby, IN and Doris (Robert) Everett, Fairmount, IN; 1 brother, John H. (Kay) Jessup, Fairmount, IN.

He was preceded in death by daughter, Karen Sue (Jessup) Trumbo, October 2, 1993; and 2 brothers, William H. and Donald D. Jessup.

Visitation is Monday, June 12, 2006 from 4-8 p.m. at Armes-Hunt Funeral Home, 415 S. Main St., Fairmount, IN.

The funeral is Tuesday, June 13, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. at the Fairmount Friends Church, 124 W. First St., Fairmount, IN with Jackie Michaelson officiating. Also there will be visitation 1 hour prior to service at the church.

Interment will be in the Park Cemetery, Fairmount, IN with military gravesdie rites.

Memorials may be made to Fairmount Friends Church, Gideons International, or the Grant County 4-H Council.
