Local Woman Dies in Accident

SACRAMENTO, July 13, (INS)
Melven Kasten, 40, of Lakewood City, Long Beach, Calif., was given a fair chance to recover tonight by doctors at Sacramento hospital, where he was taken after a highway accident in which his wife Louise, 24, was killed.
Kasten suffered a punctured lung and a fractured knee when the car he was driving left the highway and crashed into the rear of a produce truck parked off the Stockton boulevard, six and one-half miles from south of Sacramento.
Kasten's 9-year-old son Richard, suffered a broken arm and cuts about the head, and his 2-year-old daughter Mary Lou, escaped without a scratch. She was taken to the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Specks, at Rio Linda.
The couple and the children left Long Beach Thursday night, headed north for a vacation. Kasten is employed by the Proctor and Gamble Co.
The Highway Patrol report indicated Kasten may have dozed at the wheel and crashed into the rear of the truck.
