Civil War Union Army Officer. Medical Pioneer. He was a graduate of, and later a surgeon and a professor of clinical surgery at, the University of Pennsylvania. He did extensive studies of spinal cord injuries. He was an Acting Assistant Surgeon in the United States Army from 1862 to 1865. He was the author of The Principles and Practice of Surgery, and later the editor of International Encyclopædia of Surgery (6 vols., 1881-86). He was married to Sarah Stokes Wayne; the couple had seven children. His home in Haverford Township, Pennsylvania, "The Grange," is now a museum.

ASHHURST.—On Saturday morning, July 7, 1900, at his late residence, 2000 West De Lancey place, in the 61st year of his age, John Ashhurst Jr., M. D. Funeral services at the Church of the Mediator, Lombard and Nineteenth streets, on Tuesday morning next, at 12 o'clock. Interment private. Please omit flowers.
