Mary Isabelle (Gifford) Harlow
(1877-1966)

Mary Isabelle Gifford was born in Lynn Grove, Iowa on August 28, 1877. She was the third of four children born to pioneer parents Ezra B. Gifford and Ella (Parsons) Gifford, who had come to Iowa from Maine shortly after their marriage in 1869.

Mary attended school in Iowa and completed her second year of High School there. After her father's death in Iowa, she and her mother moved back to Maine.

She married Robert Andrew Harlow on June 4, 1907 in Auburn, Maine. This union was blessed with one daughter, her beloved Rosamond, the light of Mary's life.

Robert and Mary shared a home with Mary's mother, Ella for over twenty years. Robert worked at the shoe factory, Ella at the shirt factory and Mary was a homemaker, wife and mother.

By 1930, Mary and Robert purchased the home next door, at 132 Lake Street, Auburn, Maine. Ella remained in the home at 130 Lake Street. Ella had retired, and Mary took a job as a stitcher in the shoe factory. Rosamond continued her education to become a teacher.

Mary was preceded in death by her father in 1907, mother in 1942, her brother Elmer Gifford in 1872, sister Eva Inez in 1959, and sister Lorena in 1885. She is survived by her husband Robert and daughter Rosamond Harlow.

Mary was a gentle woman who enjoyed traveling, and being a mom. She enjoyed time with her family, the Harlow's, Parsons, Corbin's and extensions of them. She was a woman of character and grace.

This biography has been compiled through research of this family. Census records, birth, death, family records, and photos passed down and by stories and memories of my mom, grandparents and aunts.
