at the time he was killed. They were just concluding celebration of the Eucharist when a shell burst outside the chapel.

Cpl George A. Pace, clerk of Chaplain (Father) Joseph E. Ryan, was fatally wounded at Dong Ha, 4 July 1967. This view depicts one side of a shelter where the two of them stayed during attacks. Pace had constructed a desk for Father Ryan and this one for himself. Based on the blurry calendar in the back, this photo was likely taken in April, 1967. Courtesy of Mrs. Edwin Pace.

Corporal George A. Pace attending Chaplain (Father) Joseph E. Ryan in the Catholic mass at the Navy-Marine Dong Ha Memorial Chapel in Quang Tri Province, I Corps, Republic of Vietnam, in 1967. These two men would be injured by mortar shrapnel on 4 July 1967 while serving mass at this same altar. Corporal Pace was mortally wounded and died a few hours later. Chaplain Ryan was wounded. This photo was supplied to the US Marine Corps by Corporal Pace's mother, Mrs. Edwin Pace. Chaplain Ryan's Find a Grave memorial is number 6234052
