Claude was the son of John Wesley Chessor and Atlanta Georgie "Addie" Harper, the husband of Carolyn Alley, and the father of Norma Jean and Nettie Carolyn Chessor. He was a veteran of World War II.

Claude was known for his dulcimer-making skills. I can remember Claude, who was my great-uncle, coming to my grandparents' house and playing such tunes as "Red River Valley" on his dulcimer, and I can still see the dulcimer that he made hanging on my grandmother's bedroom wall. One of his dulcimers is in the Tennessee State Archives. Claude was interviewed in 1979 as part of the Tennessee State Parks Folklife Project Collection. Photos and audio from Claude's interview (including audio of Claude playing the dulcimer) can be found online at the Tennessee Virtual Archive.

Claude's brother John Wesley Chessor, Jr. (aka "Junior") married Virginia ("Jim") Alley, the sister of Claude's wife. Claude and Carolyn, Jim and Junior, and their parents, John and Addie Chessor and Minnie Alley, are all buried together in approximately the 49th row of the cemetery.
